This expos? of the 2004 presidential election began when Steve Freeman, a researcher, became curious about the discrepancy between exit polls, which showed Kerry as a clear victor, and the final tallies, which gave the election to George W. Bush. Freeman looked further, and began to perceive a pattern of troubling discrepancies, including what he sees as voter suppression and fraud. For example, he cites case after case in which too few voting machines were delivered to some precincts, inevitably causing hours-long waits for those who endured the lines. Other discrepancies include uncounted ballots in some cases, and in others the counting of ballots that were clearly ineligible. Many of the discrepancies demonstrably relate to the perceived voting patterns and political allegiances of people in certain districts, including those around universities. He looks especially at Ohio and Florida, where he sees flagrant manipulation by those in power. Freeman, writing with journalist Joel Bleifuss, also provide a thorough assessment of the many ways that electronic voting machines can be used to queer the results, and they warn that nothing has been done to make the 2008 vote more secure.
